Tom lived in an apartment with a small . He wanted a garden, but he did not have a . One Saturday, his aunt brought him a wooden box, some , and three small tomato plants.
Tom put the box near the sunny wall. His aunt showed him how to add soil and make three small holes. Tom placed one plant in each hole and covered the .
Every morning, Tom checked the plants. If the soil was , he gave them water. If the leaves looked weak, he moved the box a little closer to the sun.
For many days, nothing changed. Tom felt . His aunt said, “Plants are slow. You can help them, but you cannot them.” Tom tried to wait.
One morning, he saw a tiny green tomato. Then he saw another one. By the end of the week, there were six tomatoes on the plants. Tom called his aunt and told her the news.
When the first tomato turned red, Tom cut it in half. He ate one half and gave the other half to his aunt. “This is the best tomato,” he said, “because we it together.”
Tom began to keep a garden notebook. He wrote the date, the weather, and what he did for the plants. On sunny days, he wrote, “The leaves look strong.” On cloudy days, he wrote, “Wait and do not worry.” The notebook helped him see small changes.
His neighbor, Mrs. Kim, saw the box from her balcony. She asked Tom about the tomatoes and gave him two basil plants. “Tomatoes like basil,” she said. Tom did not know if plants could have friends, but he liked the idea.
In July, the balcony looked different. There were tomato leaves, basil leaves, and one small chair where Tom sat in the evening. He liked to read there after dinner. The garden was tiny, but it made the apartment feel more open.
At the end of summer, Tom saved a few tomato seeds in a paper envelope. He wrote “next year” on the front. He understood that a garden was not only food. It was also practice, patience, and a plan for the future.
Tom also learned from mistakes. One week, he gave the plants too much water. The soil stayed wet for many days, and the leaves looked sad. His aunt told him, “Care is good, but too much care can also be a problem.”
After that, Tom touched the soil before he watered the plants. If it felt dry, he added water. If it felt wet, he waited. This simple habit made him feel like a real gardener.
When school started again, Tom brought two small tomatoes for lunch. His friend asked where they came from. Tom pointed up, toward his apartment building, and said, “From my balcony garden.”
His aunt visited again in September. She saw the garden box and clapped her hands. “You made a real garden,” she said. Tom looked at the balcony and felt proud because the small box had taught him many things.
