Almost 90 startups became unicorns during the first six months of 2026, according to a TechCrunch count based on Crunchbase and PitchBook data. A unicorn is a private company valued at $1 billion or more.
The pace shows that investors are again willing to young companies. Artificial intelligence is the strongest theme, but the new group also includes businesses in healthcare, robotics, cybersecurity, finance, space technology and industrial manufacturing.

A valuation is the price investors agree on during a private funding deal; it is not money sitting in a company's bank account, and it does not guarantee future profit. Startups can later face a if new investors decide the business is worth less.
The 2026 surge also differs from the broad boom of 2021. This year's investment appears more concentrated in companies linked to AI infrastructure, automation and sectors with clear commercial customers. Even so, rapid increases in value can create pressure to grow before products and revenue are ready.
For founders, unicorn status can attract employees, customers and new capital. For investors, however, the important question comes later: whether these companies can turn expensive expectations into .
