Boston Dynamics has redesigned Atlas around a goal that is less dramatic than a backflip but more important for business: making thousands of reliable robots. The fifth-generation humanoid is described as almost an simpler than earlier research machines.
Simplification means fewer , fewer difficult and a design that fits automotive supply chains. Components can be manufactured more consistently, replaced more easily and purchased at lower cost when production grows.
The change does not mean Atlas has become a basic machine. The fully electric robot has 56 , continuous rotational joints and a 2.3-meter reach. It can lift up to 50 kilograms briefly and carry 30 kilograms during .
Atlas is designed for material handling and other industrial tasks. It can navigate with minimal supervision, scan barcodes, connect to factory software and share a newly learned task across an entire fleet.
is another production priority. Atlas can walk to a charging station and swap its own battery before returning to work. Boston Dynamics lists four hours of battery life, an IP67 protection rating and operation from minus 20 to 40 degrees Celsius.
The company unveiled the product version at CES in January and began manufacturing it immediately. All 2026 deployments were to Hyundai's Robotics Metaplant Application Center and Google DeepMind, with more customers expected in 2027.
Hyundai's backing gives Boston Dynamics access to manufacturing knowledge and automotive-grade suppliers. Hyundai has also announced a US robotics factory with capacity for up to 30,000 robots per year, although that wider target is not necessarily limited to Atlas.
Production engineering changes what counts as an impressive robot. A research prototype can use expensive custom parts and require expert maintenance. A must survive long shifts, behave predictably and be repaired without returning to a laboratory.
Atlas still has unusual agility and strength, but the new design treats reliability and as core abilities. The real test will be whether fleets can deliver useful work at a cost that industrial customers can justify.
