James Turrell has opened his 100th in Denmark, adding a major new chapter to one of ’s most recognizable series. The work, titled As Seen Below - The Dome, is located at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum and opens to the public on June 19, 2026.
A Skyspace is an that frames the sky through an opening in the ceiling. Turrell surrounds that with carefully programmed light, changing how visitors perceive the color and depth of the sky. The result is quiet, slow and : viewers sit inside the room and watch light become the artwork.
The Aarhus piece is especially ambitious. Reports describe it as Turrell’s largest Skyspace within a museum context, more than 50 feet high and about 130 feet across. It sits inside a grassy mound near the museum and forms the of ARoS’s long-delayed expansion project, The Next Level.
Turrell, now in his eighties, has spent decades making art from light, space and perception. His Skyspaces began in the 1970s and now appear around the world, from the United States to Uruguay, Austria and Australia. The new Danish work turns that long-running series into a round-number .
The opening also matters for ARoS. The museum is already known for Olafur Eliasson’s rooftop rainbow panorama, a work that helped make the building a major destination in Denmark. Adding Turrell’s Dome gives the museum another built around color, architecture and the viewer’s body.
For visitors, the work will not behave like a normal object in a gallery. It asks them to slow down, look up and notice small changes in light. That is Turrell’s signature move: he makes the sky feel designed, while reminding viewers that perception itself can be shaped.
