The Medici used cultural patronage to strengthen authority in a city that still valued its republican traditions. Today, preservation creates a new problem. Florence must protect a dense artistic while remaining a city where people live and work. If every workshop becomes a souvenir shop and every home becomes short-term accommodation, the historic centre may preserve its surfaces while losing ordinary urban life.

Florence changed the world by proving that culture could be produced as a city-wide system. The dome remains its clearest image: an astonishing work of individual design supported by finance, institutions, materials, competition, and thousands of skilled actions that no single genius could perform alone.
