Factories, post offices, businesses, and government services followed the same logic. To coordinate work across distance, people accepted that the clock above them might no longer match the Sun exactly. Shared time became infrastructure.

Different countries still measured longitude from different national meridians. In 1884, delegates met in Washington to choose a common . Greenwich Mean Time remains familiar, but Universal Time, or UTC, is now the international reference for precise time. National laboratories send data from atomic clocks to the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, which calculates the shared scale.

Phones, financial markets, power grids, aircraft, computer servers, and scientific instruments all rely on coordinated time. Most users never see the chain of laboratories and signals behind the number on a screen. Agreement has become so successful that it feels natural.

Greenwich changed the world by turning one observatory's time into a common language for location and sequence. The line on the ground is now partly historical, but the habit it represents is everywhere: choose a reference, share it widely, and let distant systems act as if they are looking at the same clock.
