WhatsApp has started opening as it prepares a major privacy change for more than three billion users. Beginning this week, people can choose a unique username that will become usable when username-based contact launches later in 2026.
At present, a phone number is the main for a WhatsApp account. That can feel too personal when someone joins a large group, contacts a business or speaks with a new acquaintance. With a username enabled, a person or business contacted for the first time will no longer automatically see the sender's number.
Reservations are gradually, so not everyone will see the option immediately. WhatsApp will notify users when it becomes available in their country. On the latest app version, the setting appears under Settings, Account and Username.
The company opened reservations early because many names overlap across its huge user base. Creators, organizations and small businesses may also an existing Instagram or Facebook username if it is available and connected to them.
WhatsApp says the feature was designed to avoid turning the service into a . There will be no browsable list and no discovery suggestions. A new contact must know the exact username before sending a first message.
Users can add an optional for another layer of spam protection. Anyone trying to make first contact would need both the username and this private key. This could reduce unwanted messages even if a username becomes known publicly.
Usernames remain optional, and existing contacts can continue using phone numbers. The reservation system also does not mean the complete feature is live everywhere. WhatsApp plans a over the coming months rather than switching all three billion accounts at once.
The change closes a long-standing between WhatsApp and messaging services that already use public handles. It may be especially valuable for group chats, marketplace conversations and customer contact, where sharing a permanent phone number can expose more personal information than necessary.
Popular names are likely to be claimed quickly, but WhatsApp recommends choosing something only intended contacts would know. The balance is deliberate: usernames should make communication easier without creating a searchable social network.
